Why Do This?

So why start Mongoose & Turtle?

We started Mongoose & Turtle in 2016. Having spent many years in the home improvement industry we wanted to start something ourselves and do it a little differently. Our main reason for doing this - well it is to do things we love doing, in a way we love doing them.

Richard does the design and specification side of things. Mark then makes it become reality by doing the making, building, fitting and fixing.

We love creating. We love meeting new people. We love new challenges.

We don't like compromises. We don't like the phrase 'that'll do.' We don't like negativity.

Saying 'that can't be done' is a challenge to us. We want to find a way it can be done.

We've added a little bit about ourselves below........if you are interested :-)

When I first joined a kitchen design company I didn't know how to use a scale rule! It took me ages to draw out the walls of a plan until someone showed me that the weird looking ruler on the desk was actually a really useful tool! Not a great start! Since then I have used one regularly.

All of my design training has been while working. If I could go back and talk to my younger self I would tell him to concentrate more at school - but then who of us wouldn't! - and go pursue a career in architecture. But this is where I am, so I get to do the next best thing and design the insides of homes, rather than the outside.

I love things that work. I love designs that work. At home I am a bit messy. My three year old son Elijah often refers to me as 'a big mess!' However everything on my laptop is very organised, and in its right place.

I hate buying just one condiment that has others in the same set. I like to have the set.

I am not keen on summer pudding, but I love a good bread pudding with custard.

I consider myself to be quite quiet but Jo, my wife, thinks I am quite loud! I do have hearing difficulties so maybe that accounts for the difference of opinion. I have hearing aids now so maybe that will help!

I love playing the keyboard, and the guitar and then trying to write songs. Half of them probably sound like bad 80's tunes!

The two most important things to me in life are my family, and my faith.

My friends and family would describe me as a laid back surfer type, with a positive attitude and a habit of having an affair with mother nature.

I left the Royal Navy when I was 21 for a girl - that didn't quite go to plan so instead I found myself travelling the world.

On my return I fell into the carpentry trade with my dad (Peter Harvey, Master Carpenter) who’s reputation was built on the quality of his workmanship, not his tendency to tell really bad jokes. The first year or so I was just his slave, passing the tools, making teas and sweeping up. I even named the broom the ‘Peter Pusher’ but during that long painful year I watched and soaked up as much knowledge as I could. We became a good team, working together for 11 years up until his retirement in 2014. He’s now off in his motorhome and I've been flying solo ever since.

I am good at what I do, and I enjoy the fact that every week brings a different challenge, a different problem to solve, and a new customer to win over with my attention to detail.

My brain is always ticking, reinventing and creating. Friends and family love my imaginative streak and ability to make things from recycled or unusual materials. I have my love of Lego to thank for that.

Away from work I try to get the best out of life. I'm a family man and spending quality time with loved ones is important to me.

As for hobbies, anything extreme gets my blood pumping but nothing beats a surf or a dive, a chance to soak my salty bones. I've missed many a birthday party or a Sunday dinner for the opportunity to get wet. My partner Vicki will tell you I am a better man after I've been bathed by my one other true love ‘Beautiful mother nature’ the only other woman i am permitted to spend time with. I believe the only affair a man could get away with and still come home to a brew and a biscuit waiting for him!

Of course I am only human....and everyone has their weaknesses! Mine are baked beans, peanuts and evil dust mites, these are my kryptonite.

I do not hate anything, there is too much hate in the world but I do dislike energy takers and negative people. In the words of Albert Einstein “Stay away from negative people, they have a problem for every solution” and I believe this to be true.

Mongoose & Turtle has been a dream that is now a reality. I am excited to work with my good friend Richard and know that our combined experience, knowledge and skills will serve us well for the journey ahead.

But Why The Name?

So why the name Mongoose & Turtle?

Maybe there should be some deep and meaningful about how we created the name.

There isn't!

Richard's wife Jo got confused many years ago between a goose and a mongoose. Richard thought it was hysterical and decided that one day he would have an enterprise with 'mongoose' in the name, with the icon being a goose!

Mark's favourite place to be is in the sea. He is part merman! So it's no surprise his favourite animals are dolphins and turtles. We thought turtle worked better with mongoose than dolphin.

And that's it!

Mongoose & Turtle was born.
